CFA Chess and Science Program

/Dear Parents and Families,

We hope everyone is doing well!

Our 20th season of the CFA Chess & Science Program is off to a great start! Over the past two Saturdays, our scholars have been actively engaged in chess instruction and friendly competition, sharpening their strategic thinking, concentration, and problem-solving skills.

It has been encouraging to see both our returning and new scholars participating, challenging one another, and putting their chess skills into practice. We look forward to building on this momentum throughout the season.

Tomorrow, Saturday, October 10th, we transition to our first Science/STEM session of the Fall season, focusing on Mathematics and its applications in everyday life.

Mathematics – Solving Equations

Presenter: Mr. Matthew Rohan, Wyandanch Middle School Mathematics Teacher Date: Saturday, October 10, 2026 Time: 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Location: Wyandanch-Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corp 295 Merritt Avenue, Wyandanch, NY 11798

Aim: How are equations used in everyday life?

We are pleased to welcome Mr. Matthew Rohan, an established mathematics teacher at Wyandanch Middle School, who brings years of experience teaching mathematics to students in our community.

Through an engaging, hands-on session, our scholars will explore how mathematics applies to everyday activities such as riding bicycles, skateboarding, and traveling in cars.

Students will work in five small groups using remote-control cars to measure and calculate average speed and rate of change, demonstrating how mathematical equations help us understand objects in motion.

The session will also introduce and reinforce important mathematical concepts, including mean, median, mode, and range, through practical examples and activities.

Our goal is to help students recognize that mathematics extends far beyond the classroom and plays an important role in understanding and solving everyday problems.

A Reminder About Arrival Time

We kindly ask parents to ensure their scholars arrive on time for our 11:00 AM start. Tomorrow’s session will involve group activities and hands-on demonstrations, so arriving promptly will help ensure that every student can participate fully and benefit from the entire presentation.

Looking Ahead – Chess Tournament Play Begins Next Week!

On Saturday, October 17th, we will return to our chess sessions and begin our organized tournament play for the Fall season. This will give our scholars an opportunity to apply the strategies they have been learning, challenge themselves through competitive games, and continue developing their skills in a friendly and supportive environment.

We encourage all scholars to attend regularly as we progress through the tournament rounds.

We look forward to another exciting Saturday of learning, discovery, and hands-on exploration!

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of the CFA Chess & Science Program and for encouraging your children to participate.
